He worked in Vicienza, Schio, Trento and Rovereto where he probably died between 1521 and 1522. \r\n\r\nThis painting is most likely a part of a predella panel, i.e. the long horizontal structure at the base or 'foot' of an altarpiece, which narrative scenes usually refer to the large image above. It shows the martyrdom of a female saint, traditionally identified as St Catherine of Alexandria who was beheaded after the failed tentative of tormenting her on a wheel. This painting is reminiscent of Francesco Verla's manner, an artist active in the Veneto near Verona, whose art combined the influence by Perugino and his school, and more Northern characteristics.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Francesco Verla","id":"A35847"},"association":{"text":"circle of","id":"THES285100"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AG3524","2019LX1526"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"81","id":"THES49713"},"free":"","case":"EAST WALL","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"81","id":"THES49713"},"free":"","case":"EAST WALL","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Frame","id":""}],[{"text":"oil paintings","id":"AAT33799"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Veneto","id":"x29376"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"ca. 1500","earliest":"1495-01-01","latest":"1504-12-31"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by Constantine Alexander Ionides","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Acquired by Constantine Alexander Ionides in Florence, via Buonarroti, on 26 February 1883, as attributed to P. della Francesca, for £100 (his inventory, private collection).
