The action of acid was used to make a pattern of grooves on a copper printing plate. This image on the printing plate was the reverse of the final image. The grooves were then filled with ink and the image was transferred onto a blank sheet of paper.

Subject Depicted
William Kent employed a variety of ornamental details in this design, including female masks, scrolling foliage and stylised flowers. The chimney-piece incorporates one large lion mask and two smaller animal masks lower down. The frieze below the mantelpiece is decorated with a Greek key pattern.

The two paintings on either side of the chimney-piece look like 16th-century family portraits. In long-established aristocratic families these would have been prized heirlooms. The painting above the fireplace, however, was probably obtained more recently, by a member of the family who had visited Italy on the Grand Tour. Kent has shown that he could design a harmonious architectural framework for paintings that might range from historical portraits to contemporary souvenirs of the Grand Tour.","physicalDescription":"Print","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Ware, Isaac","id":"A8969"},"association":{"text":"draughtsman","id":"AAT112172"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Ware, Isaac","id":"A8969"},"association":{"text":"publisher","id":"x32600"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Kent, William","id":"A8575"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Fourdrinier, Paul","id":"A8400"},"association":{"text":"printmaker","id":"AAT25164"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"printing ink","id":"AAT187371"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"etching","id":"AAT53241"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Etching, ink on paper","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Architecture","id":"THES48993"},{"text":"Interiors","id":"THES48933"},{"text":"Designs","id":"THES48968"},{"text":"British Galleries","id":"THES48985"},{"text":"Ornament prints","id":"THES49038"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AM3126"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"54C (VA)","id":"THES49247"},"free":"","case":"WE","shelf":"","box":"25"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"first published","id":"x46563"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1743","earliest":"1743-01-01","latest":"1743-12-31"},"association":{"text":"first published","id":"x46563"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"1743","earliest":"1743-01-01","latest":"1743-12-31"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"AAT53319"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"11.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"paper","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"19","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"paper","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Dimensions checked: Measured; 06/05/1999 by KN","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Plate 42 from Isaac Ware, 'The Designs of Inigo Jones and others'Designed by William Kent (born in Bridlington, East Yorkshire, 1685, died in London, 1748); drawn and published in London by Isaac Ware (born in 1704, died in London, 1766); etched by Paul Fourdrinier (active 1720-1758)","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"William Kent (after), plate 42 from 'The Designs of Inigo Jones and others', London 1743.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"(Berlin I) Berlin Staatliche Museen, Katalog der Ornamentstich-Sammlung der Staatlichen Kunstbibliothek Berlin, Berlin and Leipzig, 1936-39, 2274."}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"fireplaces","id":"AAT52267"},{"text":"depictions","id":"AAT248231"},{"text":"paintings","id":"AAT33618"},{"text":"frames","id":"AAT189814"},{"text":"pediments","id":"AAT2726"},{"text":"costume","id":"AAT178802"},{"text":"key pattern","id":"AAT10163"}],"contentConcepts":[{"text":"classicism","id":"AAT56513"}],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"British Galleries:\r\nThis panelled wall design shows the formality and careful proportion of the Palladian style.
