The madness and death of Ophelia were popular subjects for painters in the later 19th century. In Shakespeare's play Ophelia drowns herself in a river, driven mad by Hamlet's rejection of her. The painting was exhibited beside lines adapted from <i>Hamlet</i>:\r\n\r\nThere is a willow grows ascaunt the brook\r\nThat shews his hoar leaves in the glossy stream\r\nThere with fantastic garland did she make\r\nOf crow-flowers, nettles, daisies, and long purples.\r\n\r\nThe more than 30 types of flowers in this picture--and their symbolism--would have been familiar to Victorian viewers: the flowers surrounding Ophelia, and those in the garland she wears on her head, refer to constancy, love, hopelessness, and mourning; she wears a ring a grasses, relating to her longing for Hamlet. She holds a poppy-bud, symbolic of death.","physicalDescription":"Oil painting","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Redgrave, Richard","id":"A8777"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"oil paint","id":"AAT15050"},{"text":"panel","id":"AAT14657"}],"techniques":[{"text":"oil painting","id":"AAT178684"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"oil on panel\r\nFrame: 19th century gilded composition frame glazed with low reflective glass","categories":[{"text":"Paintings","id":"THES48917"}],"styles":[{"text":"British School","id":"x30967"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AG3151","2017JV8372"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"82","id":"THES49712"},"free":"","case":"WEST WALL","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"oil paintings","id":"AAT33799"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1842","earliest":"1842-01-01","latest":"1842-12-31"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by John Sheepshanks, 1857","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"76.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"estimate","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"63.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"estimate","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"102","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"2003","earliest":"2003-01-01","latest":"2003-12-31"},"part":"Frame","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"89","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"2003","earliest":"2003-01-01","latest":"2003-12-31"},"part":"Frame","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Dimensions taken from <i>Catalogue of British Oil Paintings 1820-1860</i>, Ronald Parkinson, Victoria and Albert Museum, London: HMSO, 1990","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'Richd Redgrave 1842'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Signed and dated by the artist in white, lower right"}],"objectHistory":"Given by John Sheepshanks, 1857","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Oil painting entitled 'Ophelia Weaving her Garlands' by Richard Redgrave.
