This collection of four woodblocks for ' Red Chestnut' (E.1626-1629-2000) provide us with a picture of his working methods. The four blocks produced a single colour print (see E.341-1986 in EDUC 9D). Artists usually have to cut a separate block for each colour, but in this case where two colours are sufficiently far apart in the design, Platt has cut two colours on one side of wood. Careful positioning of the elements on the block ensured that each colour registered with the others when printed. Platt also cut on both sides of each block for economy, so effectively 8 blocks were used for this print.\n\r\nIn Japanese style woodblock printing the artist usually uses water-based pigment painted onto the block like a wash. Platt used flat-ended brushes of various sizes and bamboo barens (pads) for rubbing the paper over the inked block. This wash effect can be seen on these blocks and in parts of the resultant impression.","physicalDescription":"Woodblock for printing 'Red Chestnut' cut on both sides for parts of the same image (for different colours) featuring foliage and bird forms, with lines cut for image frame on both sides.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Platt, John Edgar","id":"A9549"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Platt, John Edgar","id":"A9549"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"wood","id":"AAT11914"},{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"}],"techniques":[{"text":"wood-cutting","id":"AAT53296"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Woodblock cut on both sides","categories":[{"text":"Printmaking techniques","id":"THES252987"},{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":[],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLE","id":"THES49657"},"free":"","case":"V","shelf":"32","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"wood blocks","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1927-1928","earliest":"1927-01-01","latest":"1928-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"E.1626-2000","id":"O80241"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"E.1627-2000","id":"O80242"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"E.1628-2000","id":"O80243"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"E.341-1986","id":"O540002"},"association":"Impression"}],"creditLine":"Given by Mrs Liza Axford, grand-daughter of the artist","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"49.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"maximum","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"24.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"maximum","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"1.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"maximum","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"RC","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"in white on edge"}],"objectHistory":"Gift from artist's grand-daughter.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Printing block.
