The habit of snuff-taking spread to China from the West during the 17th century and became established in the 18th century. People generally carried snuff in a small bottle. By the 20th century these bottles had become collectors' items, owing to the great variety of materials and decorative techniques used in their production.","physicalDescription":"The bottle is an oval flattened flask form with shoulders sloping up to a long cylindrical neck.\r\nIt is made of glass, opaque white, with overlays of pink glass and dark green glass carved in relief. The stopper is flat-topped and made of amethyst.\r\nThe carved relief decoration depicts flowering plants and on the reverse a lotus.\r\nThe high foot is formed by both overlays, with an indentation underneath.
