The silk was woven by Daniel Walters & Sons in Braintree in Essex who had been in business since 1820. By the mid-19th century the firm was recognised as the leading British silk manufacturers, and employed between 200 and 300 people. The firm produced silk furnishings for a number of important commissions, including Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace. It was taken over by Warner & Sons in 1894.\r\n\r\nIn 1845 the House of Commons granted œ150,000 to enlarge Buckingham Palace, which was considered inadequate for royal entertaining. Between 1851 and 1856 a new suite of entertaining rooms was built on the south side of the Palace. This included a ballroom designed by Ludwig Gruner. Prince Albert had significant control over the scheme, which showed his interest in Raphael and Italianate design. The Queen's 'fine new room' was opened with a ball on 8 May 1856; both she and Prince Albert were delighted with it.","physicalDescription":"Furnishing fabric","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Daniel Walters & Sons","id":"A9083"},"association":{"text":"manufacturer","id":"AAT25230"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Jacquard-woven silk","categories":[{"text":"British Galleries","id":"THES48985"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2006AT5512","2006BF1191"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES309023"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Furnishing fabric","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Braintree","id":"x31816"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1855-1856","earliest":"1855-01-01","latest":"1856-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"139","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"52","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Furnishing fabric of jacquard-woven silk, with rose and thistle pattern designed by Prince Albert, woven by Daniel Walters & Son, Braintree, Essex, England, 1856","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Miller, Lesley Ellis, and Ana Cabrera Lafuente, with Claire Allen-Johnstone, eds. <u>Silk: Fibre, Fabric and Fashion</u>.
