He had not been to Constantinople at this date, but converted a set of drawings of that city by Frederick Coke-Smyth into a series of lithographs. Lewis had recently published a very successful book of lithographs of Spanish scenes, (taken from his own drawings) and this probably persuaded the publishers to commission him to work on another series of exotic scenes, even those by another artist, certainly improving on the originals.\nIt was traditional for the Sultan to attend the Friday sermon [the <i>Hutbe</i>] at the Imperial mosque, and he rode there from the palace, and back, in state, showing himself to the crowds, surrounded by his most senior officials.\nVery few of Lewis's rough sketches survive, but this group bequeathed by his widow [D.1164-D.1198-1908] often contain his first thoughts. They had been in her husband's studio up to his death in 1876,  either because they did not sell, or were not put into the Artist's sale in 1855.
