It was exhibited at the British Institution in 1830, [227]. Watercolour sketches of the same subject are known, one at Eton College, and two more in the Brinsley Ford Collection. The rough notes on the drawing refer to the Drury Lane Theatre Building, and to Richardson's Hotel, which stood in Covent Garden for most of the nineteenth century. The Duke of Bedford owned the site of the market, and was responsible for the re-development of it.\r\nVery few of Lewis's rough sketches survive, but this group bequeathed by his widow [D.1164-D.1198-1908] often contain his first thoughts. They had been in her husband's studio up to his death in 1876,  either because they did not sell, or were not put into the Artist's sale in 1855.
