He took a paddle steamer at Civitavecchia and sailed direct to the Ionian Islands. On the evidence of his sketches, he either visited or saw Cephalonia, Ithica, Santa Maura [Levkada], perhaps Poros and  Pronnoi,  Patras and Zante (now Zakynthos). He landed finally in Corfu, staying for a while, then crossing over to Albania. His route to Istanbul via Greece and Albania was similar to that taken by Byron in 1809, and that could have been the reason for this itinerary, as Lewis was known to have been influenced by the poet's work and the account of his travels\nVery few of Lewis's rough sketches survive, but this group bequeathed by his widow [D.1164-D.1198-1908] often contain his first thoughts. They had been in her husband's studio up to his death in 1876,  either because they did not sell, or were not put into the Artist's sale in 1855.
