Although individual pieces rarely date back any earlier than the 19th century, the designs are very old, and European observers liked to find traces of Roman or Phoenician influence.\r\n\r\nEarrings like these are typical of the Aurès region of Algeria, although they were also worn in neighbouring Tunisia. Their distinctive pattern, with short tabs like cogs sticking out from the lower rim, had gone out of use by the beginning of the 20th century.\r\n","physicalDescription":"Pair of large silver hoop earrings. The lower half of the hoop is filled with a pierced design in sheet silver, chased on the front, with three stylised sprays projecting up into the central space, and seven tabs projecting down from the lower rim.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Bacri","id":"AUTH327696"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"}],"techniques":[{"text":"incising","id":"AAT53847"},{"text":"chased","id":"AAT54016"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silver, beaten, chased, incised","categories":[{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Africa","id":"THES49019"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Judaism","id":"THES48929"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MES","id":"THES48607"},"images":["2008BT3353"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES394946"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES394946"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Earring","id":""}],[{"text":"Earring","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Aurès","id":"x41488"},"association":{"text":"worn","id":"x34724"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Oran","id":"x37264"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1859-1899","earliest":"1859-01-01","latest":"1899-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by Edmond Dresden","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"15","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"11.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Minerva’s head with the number 2 and the letter 'و', in a barrel-shaped frame.","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"Mark for 800 standard silver, Oran, 1859 onwards.","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"On front, on flat section between hoop and pattern."},{"content":"'MB' either side of an object like a candle stick with a disc attached by a loop, in a horizontal lozenge frame.","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"Mark of Cohen-Macroché Bacri of Algiers.","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"On the back, in the upper part of the centre."}],"objectHistory":"Accessions register entry: 'Pair of Earrings of silver, beaten and chased. / The lower part of each consists of a plate, pierced with holes, cut into lobes round the edge, and roughly chased with bands of herring-bone and other ornament.
