They were made in Iznik, a small town in north-west Anatolia. This example illustrates the monumental size, accomplished potting and well-planned decoration for which they are admired. \r\n\r\nThe white ground of this basin is painted in four colours - blue, turquoise, sage green and purple. A stylised leaf and rosette pattern has been consigned to the foot. The walls of the basin, inside and out, have vases filled with tulips, carnations and roses arranged in rows between small cypress trees.","physicalDescription":"Footed bowl, fritware, underglaze-painted in cobalt and turquoise blue, olive-green and manganese-purple, with decoration of floral sprays and cypress trees framed within arches inside and out.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"fritware","id":"x29419"}],"techniques":[{"text":"thrown","id":"AAT53908"},{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},{"text":"underglazing","id":"AAT48642"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Fritware, underglaze polychrome painted in green, manganese and blue, glazed","categories":[{"text":"Islam","id":"THES48932"},{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"}],"styles":[{"text":"Iznik","id":"AAT21623"},{"text":"Ottoman","id":"AAT21614"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"MES","id":"THES48607"},"images":["2006AN5562","2006AT6575","2017KK8287"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"42 (VA)","id":"THES49806"},"free":"","case":"6W","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Bowl","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Iznik","id":"x32510"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1550-1555","earliest":"1550-01-01","latest":"1555-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"28","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"43.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Fritware basin with floral sprays and cypress trees, Turkey (probably Iznik), 1550-1555.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Nurhan Atasoy and Julian Raby.
