These clasps come in a small number of basic shapes, including round, as here.  Round Ottoman clasps are never completely circular – they always have a protrusion, however slight, on the two ends.  The women who owned them sewed them onto cloth belts which they made themselves, usually richly embroidered.  \r\n\r\nCypriot clasps are part of the general Ottoman tradition, but are often more sophisticated and decorative than those from elsewhere.  The goldsmiths of Cyprus were famous for their filigree although they rarely marked their work.  This clasp was described as 18th or 19th century when it was acquired, and this may be true.  It was bought in 1888, just after a terrible famine, when many people had to sell their family heirlooms to survive.\r\n","physicalDescription":"Two-part silver filigree clasp.  Each part is circular in shape, with a wide flat rim of sheet silver, slightly scalloped on the outer edge, which extends to a slight point at the extreme outside of each part.  The centre consists of a disc of open filigree scrolls, with a circle of seven domed filigree rosettes round the edge.  There is a larger domed filigree rosette in the centre set with a turquoise paste.\r\n\r\nOne part has a curved sideways hook on the inside rim, and the other has a corresponding loop.  There is a turquoise paste set over the loop.\r\n","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"unknown","id":"C168"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"},{"text":"paste","id":"AAT10803"}],"techniques":[{"text":"filigree","id":"x35885"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silver filigree set with turquoise pastes","categories":[{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Traditional jewellery (Europe)","id":"THES270343"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2019LL9773","2019LL9774","2006AN9276"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"031","id":"THES407965"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"031","id":"THES407965"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Clasps","id":"AAT239507"}],[{"text":"Clasps","id":"AAT239507"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Cyprus","id":"x28802"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1750-1850","earliest":"1750-01-01","latest":"1850-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"8.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Silver filigree clasp set with turquoise pastes, Cyprus, 1750-1850.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["1535A-1888","1535-1888"],"accessionNumberNum":"1535","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1888,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Clasp [1]","Clasp [2]"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-05-21","recordCreationDate":"2003-03-28","availableToBook":true}}
