The habit of snuff-taking spread to China from the West during the 17th century and became established in the 18th century. People generally carried snuff in a small bottle. By the 20th century these bottles had become collectors' items, owing to the great variety of materials and decorative techniques used in their production.","physicalDescription":"The bottle is a flattened pear form without a stopper.\r\nIt is made of opaque white glass, with overlays of glass coloured red, amber, dark blue, light blue, and green striped with brown. It is carved in relief. \r\nThe decoration depicts two boys with a vase containing branches of pomegranate. On the reverse is a boy on a three-legged toad and bamboo. On one shoulder a bird is depicted and on the other a spray of fruit.\r\nA partial foot is formed by bamboo decoration in blue glass and there is a curved indentation underneath.\r\nThe boys and pomegranate probably convey a wish for many male children, since the pomegranite is a symbol of fertility. The boy with the three-legged toad is Liu Hai, who represents wealth.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"glass","id":"AAT10797"}],"techniques":[{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Opaque white glass, coloured red, amber, dark blue, light blue, and green striped with brown, and carved in relief","categories":[{"text":"ELISE","id":"THES48961"},{"text":"Images Online","id":"THES48937"},{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"},{"text":"Glass","id":"THES48946"},{"text":"Personal accessories","id":"THES48912"}],"styles":[{"text":"Qing","id":"AAT18478"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2021MW4206","2021MW4207","2006AU9242"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"006","id":"THES363111"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"SNUFF BOTTLE","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"China","id":"x29398"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1864-1895","earliest":"1864-01-01","latest":"1895-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Salting Bequest","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"5.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Bequeathed by Mr. George Salting, accessioned in 1910.
