Using the passion of the British for their gardens as a metaphor, the designers proposed prototype objects that examined the sense of alienation and frustration that lies beneath the surface of our personal relationships. Many of their solutions were witty and ironic, but the humour barely concealed a darker layer of anxiety. These prototypes are not intended to be mass-manufactured, but are intended to allow reflection on our relationships with objects, with nature and with each other. As such they show an interest in the conceptual content of designed objects that has inspired much innovation amongst contemporary designers.\r\n\r\nThis is called Cricket Box, and the designers described it as a drawer for collecting garden sounds. They wondered whether the sounds of a summer's day could be captured in this drawer to brighten winter evenings. Arguably it is a whimsical, impossible notion, but it is appealing none the less.","physicalDescription":"A shallow oak box with drawer surmounted on a long oak pole.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Anastassiades, Michael","id":"A5920"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Legg, Ben","id":"A9332"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Dunne & Raby","id":"C2282"},"association":{"text":"designers","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"oak","id":"AAT12264"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Oak","categories":[{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"},{"text":"Product design","id":"THES49025"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2025PD8558","2025PD8560","2025PD8559","2025PD8557","2018KP5636"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"PL004","id":"THES413453"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"PL004","id":"THES413453"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Box","id":""}],[{"text":"Drawer","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x29338"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Suffolk","id":"x29440"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1998","earliest":"1998-01-01","latest":"1998-12-31"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x29338"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"1998","earliest":"1998-01-01","latest":"1998-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"W.75-2002","id":"O79187"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"W.76-2002","id":"O79190"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"W.78-2002","id":"O79192"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"W.74:1-2002","id":"O79184"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"W.74:2-2002","id":"O79184"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"W.77-2002","id":"O79191"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"W.70:1-2002","id":"O77844"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"W.70:2-2002","id":"O77844"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"W.70:3-2002","id":"O77844"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"W.80-2002","id":"O79195"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"W.71-2002","id":"O79171"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"W.72:1-2002","id":"O79178"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"W.72:2-2002","id":"O79178"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"W.73-2002","id":"O79181"},"association":"Set"}],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"1230","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"263","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"150","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Box, 'Cricket Box', designed by by Dunne & Raby and Michael Anastassiades, oak, part of Weeds, Aliens and Other Stories collection, 1998","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"Attribution note: Commissioned by the British Council for exhibition in Prague\nReason For Production: Commission","productionType":{"text":"Unique","id":"THES48864"},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"Cricket Box\r\nA drawer for collecting garden sounds\r\n\r\nOak\r\nW.79-2002\r\n\r\nCan the sounds of a summer's day be captured in this drawer to brighten winter evenings?
