They have until recently been generally attributed to England and France, although the sophisticated court style of dress of this particular piece makes a French attribution for it very likely. There is also some evidence that similar items may have been produced in Scotland, partly because of the survival of a number of examples there.

Makers & Making
Although French in style and in the case of this embroidery probably actually made in France, most embroideries of this type with secure provenances were presumably made either in England or Scotland or for the English or Scottish markets. They would certainly have been produced in professional workshops which had access to the design sources and materials.","physicalDescription":"Embroidered linen hanging","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"linen","id":"x29412"},{"text":"wool yarn","id":"x30441"},{"text":"silk thread","id":"x30127"}],"techniques":[{"text":"embroidery","id":"x40351"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Linen, embroidered with coloured wools and silks in tent stitch","categories":[{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Embroidery","id":"THES48960"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2018LG9483","2018LG9485","2018LG9493","2006AM7167","2018LG9494","2006AP5013","2018LG9512","2011EU1951","2011FD8795","2011FD8796","2017JV3716","2018LG9513","2018LG9515"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"005","id":"THES325773"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Hanging","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"France","id":"x28849"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1600","earliest":"1595-01-01","latest":"1604-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"177","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"303","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"8.5","unit":"kg","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"2987","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"14/12/2018","earliest":"2018-12-14","latest":"2018-12-14"},"part":"Top edge","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"2990","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"14/12/2018","earliest":"2018-12-14","latest":"2018-12-14"},"part":"Bottom edge","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"1710","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"14/12/2018","earliest":"2018-12-14","latest":"2018-12-14"},"part":"Proper right","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"1718","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"14/12/2018","earliest":"2018-12-14","latest":"2018-12-14"},"part":"Proper left","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"17","unit":"kg","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"14/12/2018","earliest":"2018-12-14","latest":"2018-12-14"},"part":"Weighed on roller","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Dimensions checked: Measured; 14/02/2001 by KB\n\nWidth of border depends on method of display - when mounted tension will cause dimensions to change.May have pulled into parallelogram shape - MK to check - KB adds 14/02/2001 that it has pulled into slight parallelogram; LH advises that tension should not increase dims significantly","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"The central scene is taken partly from an engraving by Philip Galle, Antwerp, 1578; see British Museum 1853,0312.230","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"embroidered, 1600c, French; Lucretia's banquet, silk wool, canvaswork","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"British Galleries:\nThe central scene of this hanging shows Lucretia's Banquet.
