It was originally wider: the right-hand border has been cut, the width of the carpet has been reduced and the border has been re-attached, probably to make the proportions more acceptable to a European buyer.

Materials & Making
In a pile fabric, such as this panel, the foundation consists of two sets of threads, warp and weft, which interlace at right-angles. The pile is created by tying a knot of coloured thread around two adjacent warp threads, building up the design row by row while the foundation is being woven by the insertion of weft. It requires only a small, simple loom, and is easily done by hand. In this panel there are 1,403 knots per square decimetre.

Design & Designing
The pattern of this carpet is unusual: the palmettes arranged in diagonal stripes surrounded by a border of stylised stems and blossoms is often found on embroidered covers and wall hangings, but this is the only known example of it worked in knotted pile.","physicalDescription":"Wool carpet","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"wool","id":"x40131"}],"techniques":[{"text":"weaving","id":"AAT53642"},{"text":"knotting","id":"AAT53635"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Hand knotted woollen pile on woollen warp and weft","categories":[{"text":"Floor coverings","id":"THES48953"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2006AL3651","2011ET5855","2013GD0096"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"120LP","id":"THES49900"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Carpet","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Turkey","id":"x29225"},"association":{"text":"woven","id":"AAT53642"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1700-1800","earliest":"1700-01-01","latest":"1800-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"164","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"109","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"13","unit":"kg","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"weight with roller","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"13/09/2001 by JW","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Woven in Turkey","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"1700-1800s, Turkish","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"British Galleries:\nSo-called 'Persian' carpets, mostly made in Turkey, had been imported into Britain since the 17th century.
