In the search for ideas for a new building style British architects studied architecture outside Europe. These traditional forms were also threatened with obliteration by `the march of progress', and drawings had to be made to record them before they were destroyed.

People
Spiers was an architect better-known for his teaching and writing on the subject than as a practitioner. In 1865-1866 he toured the Middle East on a travelling scholarship from the Royal Academy. On his return he exhibited several pictures with Eastern subjects at the Royal Academy of which this was probably one. His aim was to encourage British architects to adopt or be inspired by the very different traditions of architectural practice to be found within Islam.

Subjects Depicted
In 1751 the Governor of Damascus, Assad Pasha al-Azam, commissioned the construction of this khan or secure place for merchants to stay, store and sell their goods. It was completed in 1753. The alternate colours of the bands of stone are good examples of polychrome or multicoloured architecture. Spiers wanted this type of building technique imitated in Britain.","physicalDescription":"Watercolour drawing","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Spiers, Richard Phené (FRIBA, FSA)","id":"A8877"},"association":{"text":"painter (artist)","id":"AAT25136"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"watercolour","id":"x33202"}],"techniques":[{"text":"watercolour drawing","id":"x37878"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Watercolour over pencil, stuck down on card","categories":[{"text":"Paintings","id":"THES48917"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AU8325","2008BV6542"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"SCX","shelf":"5","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"watercolour","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Syria","id":"x29200"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1865-1866","earliest":"1865-01-01","latest":"1866-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchased with the assistance of the National Heritage Memorial Fund, Art Fund, Shell International and the Friends of the V&A","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"36.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"unmounted","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"25.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"unmounted","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Dimensions checked: Measured; 15/08/2000 by PaperCons\n\nEstimated mount dimensions previously given as 53.2x38","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Signed R.Phené Spiers.; lettered with title and name of artist on former mount","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"According to Rodney Searight: - `Bt Christie's, [2] Nov.1979 [(191)], via Fine Art Society,\r\n£110+'.","historicalContext":"The artist exhibited `Great Khan at Damascus' at the RA in 1867 (911).","briefDescription":"Watercolour, `The Great Khan, Damascus', 1865-1866, by Richard Phené Spiers FRIBA FSA","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Searight, Rodney and Scarce, Jennifer M., A Middle Eastern journey : artists on their travels from the collection of Rodney Searight, Talbot Rice Art Centre, 1980","id":"AUTH351213"},"details":"","free":""},{"reference":{"text":"Darby, M, The Islamic Perspective: Aspect of British Architecture and Design in the 19th Century, London, V&A, 1983","id":"AUTH353297"},"details":"","free":""}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[{"text":"Syria","id":"x29200"},{"text":"Damascus","id":"x32596"},{"text":"Khan of Assad Pasha al-Azam","id":"x42283"}],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"khans","id":"AAT250988"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"British Galleries:\nThe artist Richard Phen‚ Spiers toured the Eastern Mediterranean region from 1865 to 1866 to study both ancient and contemporary Islamic architecture.
