A difficult technique, with little room for error, it gives the feeling of spontaneity, although the brushwork is tightly controlled. Watercolours of exotic subjects such as this had been popular in Britain since the 18th century, but the Victorian period was the time of greatest demand. By the end of the 19th century, however, the rise of cheap photography and coloured photo-mechanical illustrations had reduced their popularity.

People
Collins was a painter of landscapes, costume, military and architectural subjects who exhibited widely in London. He also illustrated books, including his own published works on the cathedrals of Spain and Italy.","physicalDescription":"Watercolour drawing","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Collins, William Wiehe (RI)","id":"A8264"},"association":{"text":"painter (artist)","id":"AAT25136"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"watercolour","id":"x33202"}],"techniques":[{"text":"watercolour drawing","id":"x37878"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Watercolour over pencil, heightened with white and gum, on stiff paper","categories":[{"text":"Paintings","id":"THES48917"},{"text":"Black History","id":"THES48989"},{"text":"Africa","id":"THES49019"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AM5703","2008BV6624"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"SCX","shelf":"8","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"watercolour","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Africa","id":"x29327"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":"North"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1900-1910","earliest":"1895-01-01","latest":"1910-12-31"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"AAT54216"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchased with Art Fund support, and the assistance of the National Heritage Memorial Fund, the Friends of the V&A and Shell International","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"22.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"14.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"unmounted","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Dimensions checked: measured; 15/08/2000 by PaperCons\n\nEstimated mount size previoulsy given as 53.4x38.1","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Signed W Collins","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"According to Rodney Searight: - `Bt Bonhams (via Holder), June 1972, £20'.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Watercolour, North African Man in travelling costume, about.1890-1910 by William Wiehe Collins RI","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Briony Llewellyn, `The Orient Observed' 1989 p.112"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"British Galleries:\nThe work of widely-travelled artists like William Collins inspired the imagination of people who had never travelled beyond Europe.
