The complex mechanism is very characteristic of its maker, Charles Gretton. There is also a calendar mechanism, with a date aperture in the dial. The prominent silver mount on the top of the clock is pierced with scrolling foliage and bears the crest and cipher of Charles Bodville Robartes, 2nd Earl of Radnor (1685-1723). The clock has undergone some restoration.

People
Charles Gretton was one of the best London clockmakers of the early 18th century. He was apprenticed in 1662, became a member of the Clockmakers Company in 1672 and was Master of the Clockmakers' Company from 1700 to 1733. He made watches, long-case clocks and bracket clocks, many like this example with complex repeating movements.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Gretton, Charles","id":"A8453"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Ebony case, with engraved and pierced silver mounts","categories":[{"text":"Clocks & Watches","id":"THES48976"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AU6968","2017JU9940"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"54A (VA)","id":"THES49250"},"free":"","case":"CA2","shelf":"","box":"6"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Clock","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1700","earliest":"1695-01-01","latest":"1704-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Herbert Sleigh","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"35.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"22.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"front","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"15.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"4 max\nDimensions checked: measured; 14/11/2000 by Rachel Church\n\nhandle does not stay up so display dimension is with handle down\r\n\r\n35.5 handle up; 32 cm handle down","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Bears the arms, crest and cipher of Charles Bodville Robartes 2nd, Earl of Radnor; inscribed 'Charles Gretton in Fleet Street'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":"A8877"},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Made in London and signed by Charles Gretton (apprenticed to the Clockmaker's Company 1662, Master of the Clockmaker's Company 1700)","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Bracket Clock - Gretton","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"British Galleries:\nThe lavish silver mounts and engraved crest indicate that this clock was a special commission for Charles Robartes, 2nd Earl of Radnor (1660-1723).
