It is based on the classical tripods of ancient Greece which were to be found in temples and similar monuments.

Design & Designing
This burner was made by the London ormolu maker Diedrich Nicolaus Anderson (died 1767) to a design by the architect James Stuart (1713-1788). Designs by Stuart for similar perfume burners are to be found in Sir John Soane's Museum in London.

Makers & Making
At the edge of the bowl are three slots. These were designed to take three branches with candle-sconces. A very similar perfume burner at Kedleston Hall, Derbyshire, is fitted with branches, and one of the designs by Stuart in Soane's Museum shows such branches. The other design has none, which seems to indicate that such branches were optional.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Stuart, James 'Athenian'","id":"A8895"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Anderson, Diederich Nicolaus","id":"A8089"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":"probably"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Cast ormolu (gilt bronze) on marble plinth","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AN3805","2006AH9230","2006AH9227","2006AN3806","2017JT7983"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"118D (VA)","id":"THES49229"},"free":"","case":"CA5","shelf":"","box":"38"},{"current":{"text":"118D (VA)","id":"THES49229"},"free":"","case":"CA5","shelf":"","box":"38"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Perfume burner","id":""}],[{"text":"Lid","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1760","earliest":"1755-01-01","latest":"1764-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"53.97","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"27","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"approx.","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"28.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"maximum","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Made in London, probably by Diederich Nicolaus Anderson (dies 1767), from a design by James Stuart (born in London, 1713, died there in 1788)\r\n\r\nJames Athenian Stuart Exhibition RF.2005/775\r\n\r\nClassical Ideal Exhibition RF.2009/1012","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Ormolu\n\nOrmolu","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"British Galleries:\nThe ancient Greek and Roman tripod form, originally devised for sacrificial altars, was used in many ways by Neo-classical designers.
