The habit of snuff-taking spread to China from the West during the 17th century and became established in the 18th century. People generally carried snuff in a small bottle. By the 20th century these bottles had become collectors' items, owing to the great variety of materials and decorative techniques used in their production.","physicalDescription":"The bottle is a slender elongated oblong form, narrower towards the base, with the shoulders sloping up to a flared neck and no stopper.\r\nIt is made from yellow glass with carved decoration and an overlay of pale blue glass applied in places and partly cut away to form further decoration.\r\nIt is carved with a continuous decoration of a draped and tied scarf, five roundels containing the shou (long life) character in seal script, and five bats; masks and mock ring handles. There is a band of pale blue overlay around neckrim.\r\nThe high splayed foot partly formed by overlay has a shallow indentation underneath.\r\nThe five bats represent the five blessings (long life, riches, health, love of virtue and a natural death, since the Chinese word for bat, fu, forms a homonym with the word for happiness.\r\nThe restrained used of overlay, the carving on monochrome glass, and the form of decoration together suggest a relatively early date.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"glass","id":"AAT10797"}],"techniques":[{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Yellow glass with an overlay of blue glass and carved decoration","categories":[{"text":"ELISE","id":"THES48961"},{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"},{"text":"Personal accessories","id":"THES48912"},{"text":"Glass","id":"THES48946"}],"styles":[{"text":"Qing","id":"AAT18478"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2021MW2721","2006AU9411"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"007","id":"THES363112"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"SNUFF BOTTLE","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"China","id":"x29398"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1750-1850","earliest":"1750-01-01","latest":"1850-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Salting Bequest","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"7.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Bequeathed by Mr. George Salting, accessioned in 1910.
