The framer who made it used pinewood shaped into what is called a reverse section. This means that the most prominent section of moulding is closest to the print, and the frame sweeps away downwards to the outer edge of the frame.

There is a special technical vocabulary for describing the separate parts which make up a complex frame moulding such as this. From the back edge (the outer edge of the frame, furthest from the picture) the mouldings are ovolo, double bead, caveto, bead, caveto, sight edge (the inner edge of the frame nearest the picture). A bead moulding is a small half-round convex moulding like the profile of a bead on a necklace. A double bead moulding is two bead mouldings side by side. A caveto is a concave quarter-round moulding , and an ovolo is a convex quarter-round moulding with narrow horizontal bands top and bottom. After shaping, the pinewood was then painted black.

This frame looks very similar to another print frame in the V&A (museum no. E.5-2001). The differences between them are that the moulded timber is slightly wider in section on this frame, and on this frame there is a double bead moulding, whereas on the other frame there is a single bead in the equivalent position. Otherwise they are the same.

Ownership & Use
The 18th-century owners of prints presumably displayed them in frames in their home or workplace for the same reasons that we do today, because they admired the print, or the subject was especially meaningful to them.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Painted pinewood","categories":[{"text":"Frames","id":"THES48949"},{"text":"British Galleries","id":"THES48985"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AL7875","2006AL7775"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"52D","id":"THES49257"},"free":"","case":"WS","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print frame","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"18th century","earliest":"1700-01-01","latest":"1800-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"E.1114-2008","id":"O180830"},"association":""}],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Print frame, painted pinewood, 18th century","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.6-2001"],"accessionNumberNum":"6","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":2001,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-12","recordCreationDate":"2003-03-27","availableToBook":false}}
