By the late 19th century wallpapers were widely used by all classes, both in homes and in public buildings.

Design & Designing
The pattern of this Morris & Co. wallpaper is said to have been adapted from an early 18th-century wallpaper by an unknown designer. The source for this earlier paper was an Indian chintz (painted or printed cotton) pattern. There has always been a close relationship between wallpapers and textiles: in the 18th century wallpapers were designed to imitate the patterns and even the textures of embroideries, silks, brocades and velvets and other fabrics.

People
Although this wallpaper was produced by the company of William Morris, it was not designed by Morris himself. A letter from Morris's business manager suggests that this paper was the work of the architect George Gilbert Scott (1839-1897). In 1874 Scott was one of the founders of Watts & Co, a company which issued some wallpapers in a similar style.","physicalDescription":"Specimen of 'Indian' wallpaper, a formalised foliate design, brown on a pink ground; Colour woodblock print in distemper, on paper; Inscribed on the back in ink with title, number etc.\r\nPart of a pattern book containing 23 Morris & Co. patterns (E.3698-3704, 3706-3718, 3720-3722-1927).","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Morris, William","id":"A8676"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Morris & Co.","id":"A1365"},"association":{"text":"publisher","id":"x32600"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"printing ink","id":"AAT187371"}],"techniques":[{"text":"colour woodblock print","id":"x37101"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Colour woodblock print on paper","categories":[{"text":"Wall coverings","id":"THES48878"},{"text":"Interiors","id":"THES48933"},{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"}],"styles":[{"text":"Arts and Crafts (movement)","id":"AAT21205"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2020MN1492","2006AT7700"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"125C (VA)","id":"THES49896"},"free":"","case":"CA2","shelf":"","box":"24"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"wallpaper","id":""}],[{"text":"print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"AAT53319"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1868-70","earliest":"1863-01-01","latest":"1872-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"E.748-1915","id":"O249018"},"association":"Colourway"},{"object":{"text":"E.757-1915","id":"O249027"},"association":"Colourway"},{"object":{"text":"E.758-1915","id":"O249028"},"association":"Colourway"},{"object":{"text":"E.759-1915","id":"O249029"},"association":"Colourway"},{"object":{"text":"E.3707-1927","id":"O249413"},"association":"Colourway"},{"object":{"text":"E.3708-1927","id":"O249415"},"association":"Colourway"},{"object":{"text":"E.3709-1927","id":"O249416"},"association":"Colourway"}],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by J.
