Like this example, the frieze often had a bold pattern.

People
William Shand Kydd (1864-1936) had worked for the wallpaper manufacturer Hayward & Son before setting up his own wallpaper business in London in 1891. In the early years he designed most of the papers himself. They were highly praised at the time for their originality, confident design, and beautiful colouring. The company became very successful and supplied papers to the most fashionable London furnishing shops.

Materials & Making
This frieze was produced by printing the outlines of the pattern from a carved wood block, and then filling in the colour using stencils. Stencils had been used to apply colour to wallpapers in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. In the 1880s it was reintroduced to commercial wallpaper production by Hayward & Sons. Shand Kydd learned the technique when he worked for the company and went on to use it for many of the wallpapers and friezes produced by his own firm.","physicalDescription":"Portion of wallpaper frieze with 'Ravenna' design, scrolling foliage with flowers, on a pale ground; Outlines block printed and filled in with stencil, on paper.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Kydd, William Shand","id":"A7567"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Shand Kydd Ltd","id":"A7569"},"association":{"text":"manufacturer","id":"x33306"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"printing","id":"AAT53319"},{"text":"stencilling","id":"AAT53433"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Outlines block printed and filled in with stencil, on paper","categories":[{"text":"Wall coverings","id":"THES48878"},{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AM8387"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLC (VA)","id":"THES49171"},"free":"","case":"MM","shelf":"12","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"wallpaper frieze","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"AAT53319"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1896","earliest":"1896-01-01","latest":"1896-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"E.1040-1970","id":"O1110583"},"association":"Colourway"},{"object":{"text":"E.1041-1970","id":"O687154"},"association":"Colourway"},{"object":{"text":"E.1042-1970","id":"O687153"},"association":"Colourway"}],"creditLine":"Given by Shand Kydd Ltd","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"76","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"115.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Dimensions checked: Measured; 10/10/2000 by PaperCons","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Lettered in the selvedge: 'SHAND KYDD DES.' and 'RAVENNA'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":"A8877"},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Given by by Shand Kydd Ltd.\r\nDesigned by William Shand Kydd (born in Edinburgh, 1864, died in London, 1936) and printed by his firm in London.\r\nThis design was first produced in 1896.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Portion of wallpaper frieze with 'Ravenna' design, scrolling foliage with flowers, on a pale ground; Outlines block printed and filled in with stencil, on paper; Design by William Shand Kydd; Produced by Shand Kydd Ltd; London, England; 1896.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Oman, Charles C., and Hamilton, Jean. Wallpapers: a history and illustrated catalogue of the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum.
