The blank shape is smooth, uninterrupted and rimless. The Burslem pottery of Pinder, Bourne & Co. would manufacture a run of these dishes, stockpiling them for their own painters or selling them on to other decorating companies and workshops in London, as in this case, and elsewhere. Kate Faulkner has taken full advantage of the surface to produce an over-all textile-like pattern.

People
Kate Faulkner was the sister of Charles (Charlie) Faulkner, one of the original - and most briefly connected - partners of Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. Faulkner was a mathematics don whom Morris had known since his time at Oxford. Kate Faulkner's talents as a pattern maker were put to use across a range of the firm's production but this is the only dish known to be by her. Her sister Lucy was a skilful painter of Morris's tiles, particularly specialising in figures.","physicalDescription":"STAR FLOWER' PLATE","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Faulkner, Kate","id":"A8379"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Faulkner, Kate","id":"A8379"},"association":{"text":"painter (artist)","id":"AAT25136"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Pinder, Bourne & Co","id":"A9194"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co.","id":"A1197"},"association":{"text":"manufacturer","id":"x33306"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Earthenware, with hand-painted glaze in blue","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Art Pottery","id":"THES49021"},{"text":"Woman Artist","id":"THES387590"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2006AT7323","2019MC9575","2020MP1294"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"125G (VA)","id":"THES49212"},"free":"","case":"CA8","shelf":"","box":"10"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Plate","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Burslem","id":"x30231"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1880","earliest":"1880-01-01","latest":"1880-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"45","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Dimensions checked: measured; 19/12/1998 by sf","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Designed and painted by Kate Faulkner (born in 1842, died in 1898), for Morris & Co., 1880; the blank made by Pinder, Bourne & Co, Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Star flower dish, designed and painted by Kate Faulkner for Morris & Co., onto a ceramic blank made by Pinder, Bourne and Co., England, 1880","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"British Galleries:\nThis dish is a rare example of decorative ceramics produced by Morris & Co., a firm which otherwise specialised in tiles.
