Sometimes the women depicted were actresses or courtesans.

People
Margaret Woffington, (1718-1760), popularly known as `Peg', and the most famous actress of her day, enjoyed a lively and unconventional life. Various artists painted her, and this is almost certainly a portrait of her, although many pictures of attractive young women of that period are wrongly thought to be of her. This portrait is not signed, but the delicate treatment of the flesh tones and the sensitive rendering of the costume justify the attribution to Jean-Baptiste van Loo (1684-1745). He was so successful as a portrait painter, by 1738 he had to give five sittings a day at his studio in Henrietta Street, Covent Garden, and prospective sitters were forced to apply six weeks in advance.","physicalDescription":"Oil painting","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Loo, Jean-Baptiste van","id":"A8628"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":"attributed to"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"oil paint","id":"AAT15050"},{"text":"canvas","id":"AAT14078"}],"techniques":[{"text":"oil painting","id":"AAT178684"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"oil on canvas","categories":[{"text":"Paintings","id":"THES48917"},{"text":"Portraits","id":"THES48906"}],"styles":[{"text":"Rococo","id":"AAT21155"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AM8772","2006AV2989"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"53A","id":"THES49763"},"free":"","case":"WN","shelf":"","box":"49"},{"current":{"text":"53A","id":"THES49763"},"free":"","case":"WN","shelf":"","box":"49"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"oil paintings","id":"AAT33799"}],[{"text":"frames (furnishings)","id":"AAT189814"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1738","earliest":"1733-01-01","latest":"1742-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by John Jones","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"111","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"88","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"9.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Dimensions checked: Conservator; 18/01/1999 by LM/NC","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Bequeathed by John Jones, 1882","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Oil painting, 'Margaret (Peg) Woffington', attributed to Jean-Baptiste van Loo, ca. 1738","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Ashton, Geoffrey. Catalogue of Paintings at the Theatre Museum, London. ed.
