These functional objects provided a chance to impress guests with the host's wealth and taste.

Design
The fashionable world took up the vase form as a symbol of the new 'antique' style. The demand for 'antique' vases was so great that, in addition to copying surviving classical antiquities, manufacturers copied designs from prints of the 17th to 18th centuries. Some of these prints were highly fanciful inventions, which were not seriously intended for production. The silversmith who made this silver vase adapted the design from a vase print by Friedrich Kirschner (1748-1789), a German painter of miniatures and an engraver. The V&A has a vase (museum no. 131-1878) in Black Basalt in this design made by the ceramics manufacturer Josiah Wedgwood (1730-1795).","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Arnell, John","id":"A8099"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":"possibly"},{"name":{"text":"Kirschner, Friedrich","id":"A8582"},"association":{"text":"printmaker","id":"AAT25164"},"note":"after"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silver gilt, with cast, chased and applied decoration","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Tableware & cutlery","id":"THES48888"},{"text":"Drinking","id":"THES48965"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AN1269","2018KP2350","2019LX2080"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"118D","id":"THES49229"},"free":"","case":"CA2","shelf":"","box":"17"},{"current":{"text":"118D","id":"THES49229"},"free":"","case":"CA2","shelf":"","box":"17"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Sugar bowl","id":""}],[{"text":"Lid","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1772-1773","earliest":"1772-01-01","latest":"1773-12-31"},"association":{"text":"hallmarked","id":"x32454"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"27.94","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"11.43","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Based on a printed design by the miniaturist and engraver, Friedrich Kirschner (born in Bayreuth, Germany, 1748, died in Augsburg, Germany, 1789)","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["55-1865","55A-1865"],"accessionNumberNum":"55","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1865,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Sugar bowl","Lid"],"assets":["2019LN0618","2019LR2807","2019LR2445","2019LR0013","2019LP9386","2019LU4045","2019LV7768"],"recordModificationDate":"2025-11-14","recordCreationDate":"2003-03-27","availableToBook":false}}
