Such pieces have a strong metaphysical presence, often evoking a sense of history, of previous lives or deaths in particular spaces. Her sculpture is usually on a large scale; she famously cast a terraced house in the East End of London – a venture that won her the Turner Prize in 1993. \r\n\r\nThe scale of <i>Herringbone Floor</i> is modest by comparison, yet conveys similar notions about space, history, presence and absence. The artist has used the pattern of a wooden-block floor as a medium for expressing the 'space' between the blocks.","physicalDescription":"Laser-cut relief in 0.8mm Finnish birch plywood based on a drawing of, and tracing the lines of, a parquet floor - forming a grid-like pattern of interlocking, irregular rectangles. The artist has used a pattern made of wood as a medium for expressing the 'space' between the blocks. Signed and dated by the artist, one of an edition of 450.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Whiteread, Rachel","id":"A9323"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Lasercraft","id":"A9325"},"association":{"text":"makers","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"birchwood","id":"x37631"},{"text":"card support","id":"x37633"}],"techniques":[{"text":"laser-cut relief","id":"x37632"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Laser-cut relief, birch plywood","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"},{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Artists' multiples","id":"THES48991"},{"text":"Woodwork","id":"THES48877"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AF6083"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"SB17","shelf":"SH2","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x29338"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Huntingdon","id":"x33680"},"association":{"text":"produced","id":"x30771"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2001","earliest":"2001-01-01","latest":"2001-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchased through the Julie and Robert Breckman Print Fund","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"51.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"framed size","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"45.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"framed size","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"35.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"cut surface","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"29.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"cut surface","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"51.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"with frame","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"45","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"with frame","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"The work was sold by the publisher in a bespoke frame selected by the artist.","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"RW","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"2001","earliest":"2001-01-01","latest":"2001-12-31"},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"pencil","method":"","position":"on mount, on lower right","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"Monogram","note":"Monogram; on mount, on lower right; pencil; 2001"},{"content":"15/450","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"pencil","method":"","position":"on mount on lower right","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"maker's mark","note":"maker's mark; on mount on lower right; pencil"},{"content":"Herringbone Floor","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"pencil","method":"","position":"on mount, lower left","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"picture title","note":"picture title; on mount, lower left; pencil"},{"content":"2001","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"pencil","method":"","position":"on mount, lower left","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"Date","note":"Date; on mount, lower left; pencil"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"'Herringbone Floor', Laser-cut relief in birch plywood, Rachel Whiteread, England, 2001.
