The colours of 18th and 19th century embroideries were originally very bright but many have faded to pleasing pastel shades; often great quantities of metal thread were used. Napkins were mainly used to clean fingers during meals, but were also used as decoration and as covers. Their designs were consistently inventive.","physicalDescription":"Towel/Napkin Border, cotton embroidered with silk in double darning, with metal thread in double darning, fishbone and satin stitch and with plate in satin stitch filling in squares and satin stitch.\r\nThe narrow border is formed by a scalloped line of metal thread; at each point there is tree-like foliage in dark green alternating with light green and containing two flowerheads. The main border contains two repeated motifs: (1) a large tree with a pair of metal thread leaves, dark and light green foliage and small pink flowerheads and (2) a rather abstract arrangement which may be interpreted as a rectangular blue pool above which is a building flanked on either side by rectangular flowerbeds, each containing a single cypress tree; there is a large pink and metal thread blossom on top.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"cotton yarn","id":"x30425"},{"text":"silk thread","id":"x30127"},{"text":"metal thread","id":"x30421"}],"techniques":[{"text":"weaving","id":"AAT53642"},{"text":"embroidering","id":"AAT53653"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Cotton, embroidered with silk and metal thread in double darning, with metal thread in double darning, fishbone and satin stitch, and with plate in satin stitch filling in squares and satin stitch","categories":[{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Embroidery","id":"THES48960"}],"styles":[{"text":"Ottoman","id":"AAT21614"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"MES","id":"THES48607"},"images":["2006AL8112","2018LG5792"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"011","id":"THES312650"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Towel or Napkin Border","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Turkey","id":"x29225"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1800-1899","earliest":"1800-01-01","latest":"1899-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Mrs Muriel Thomson","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"towel or napkin border, embroidered, 1800s, Turkish","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Marianne Ellis and Jennifer Wearden.
