Due to its shape, with its squat and bulbous side, together with its curved lip, this piece would have been modelled on a silver or pewter prototype. Single handed porringers were produced solely for the English market as they were not used in continental Europe. The figures upon the vessel were probably copied from an illustration in the Atlas Japanensis compiled by Arnold Montanus in 1669. These female figures were known in Europe as 'Long Elizas' and reflected the idealised perception of the orient in the fashionable and popular chinoiserie style.
