The Victoria & Albert Museum had been given a large panel of various, unrelated, fragments by the stained glass collector Henry Vaughan in 1900. This large panel was subsequently broken up and reframed with other fragments for the purpose of displaying interesting pieces of 15th century glass decorated in English workshops.\r\n\r\nEngland had a rich tradition of stained glass in the Middle Ages but the political and religious upheavals of the 16th and 17th centuries destroyed a great deal and much only survives in a fragmentary state.\r\n\r\nThe central image on this panel is of an angel playing a trapezoidal psaltery. Such musical instrument-playing angels often formed part of scenes of the Last Judgement. The psaltery was a very popular stringed instrument in the Middle Ages. The instrument is held against the chest and is either plucked with the fingers, as appears here, or with a plectrum.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Stained glass","id":"AAT10853"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Stained glass","categories":[{"text":"Stained Glass","id":"THES48891"},{"text":"Christianity","id":"THES48978"},{"text":"British Galleries","id":"THES48985"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2006AJ7988","2017JY0874"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES392126"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Panel","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"15th century","earliest":"1400-01-01","latest":"1500-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by Mr Henry Vaughan","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"63","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"20","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Composite panel of clear, coloured and flashed glass painted with brown/black pigment and silver (yellow) stain.
