They orginated in Delhi in the early 19th century. The 'chaugoshia' was worn informally at court and elaborate versions of it are seen on the heads of the last Mughal princes. This style spread to Lucknow, a notably fashion conscious city in the days of the independent Nawabs (1753-1856), and became increasingly popular as the turban fell into disuse. In Lucknow, it became less elongated and more rounded and special wooden and copper hat stands were developed to maintain the shape.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"satin","id":"AAT132902"},{"text":"sequins","id":"x30374"},{"text":"beads","id":"x32809"}],"techniques":[{"text":"embroidering","id":"AAT53653"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Satin, decorated with sequins, tinsel, silver and gold beads","categories":[{"text":"Hats & headwear","id":"THES48943"},{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"},{"text":"India Museum","id":"THES286062"},{"text":"Court","id":"THES276192"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2006AH2089","2011FA1567","2011FA1579"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES326995"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Cap (headgear)","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Burhanpur","id":"x35073"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"mid 19th century","earliest":"1825-01-01","latest":"1875-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"15.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"18","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Transferred from the India Museum in 1879. 1880 Register Entry: [Case 13] '0357.
