Modelled after a Scottish Glengarry bonnet, it is embroidered with Kashmir shawl-style motifs. Whether this modified Glengarry was intended as a tourist novelty or for local use is uncertain; Scottish regiments had long been deployed across India, and it is possible that such caps became popular in the region after Captain Colin Mackenzie instituted the Glengarry as the uniform cap of the Ludhiana Sikh Regiment in 1848. Similarly adapted Glengarrys, decorated with beadwork and moosehair embroidery, were fashionable with certain groups of native peoples in the North America at this time as well, showing the extent of the hat's popularity abroad.","physicalDescription":"Woollen cap, red ground of three sections (top and two sides) with red interior lining made up of smaller patches. Inscribed on the interior with short, undeciphered markings.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"wool","id":"AAT243430"}],"techniques":[{"text":"embroidery","id":"x40351"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Wool embroidered with wool","categories":[{"text":"Hats & headwear","id":"THES48943"},{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"},{"text":"India Museum","id":"THES286062"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2006AH2055","2006AN8423","2006AN8422"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"VADunScotDesGal","id":"THES281347"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Cap (headgear)","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Ludhiana","id":"x36412"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1855","earliest":"1855-01-01","latest":"1855-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"4718(IS)","id":"O476056"},"association":"Pair"}],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"30.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"12.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"14","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"front to back 26cm, including ties 45cm, if on a hat mount ties will hang down and increase height measurement from 12.5cm to 31.5cm approx"},{"dimension":"Height","value":"12","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"30/05/2017","earliest":"2017-05-30","latest":"2017-05-30"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Circumference","value":"62","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"30/05/2017","earliest":"2017-05-30","latest":"2017-05-30"},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Undeciphered inscription, probably in Urdu","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Transferred from the India Museum in 1879.
