Designs of woven shawls could be reproduced in needlework at one third of the cost as the embroidery required much less skill and effort than the complicated pattern weaving. This cap would probably have been worn on its own, but could have had a turban wrapped around it for extra protection from the cold Kashmiri winters.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"wool","id":"AAT243430"}],"techniques":[{"text":"embroidering","id":"AAT53653"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Quilted wool","categories":[{"text":"Hats & headwear","id":"THES48943"},{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"},{"text":"India Museum","id":"THES286062"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2006AH2059","2011FA1581"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES343864"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Cap (headgear)","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Kashmir","id":"x32584"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1860-ca. 1870","earliest":"1855-01-01","latest":"1874-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"16","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"17","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Embroidered wool cap, Kashmir, ca. 1860-ca. 1870","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Hats from India / Rosemary Crill.
