This role is known as Oni no Nembutsu, and graphic depictions of it were printed in the style of picture known as Otsu-e ('Otsu pictures') after the village of Otsu on the shore of Lake Biwa near Kyoto where they were originally produced. Prints depicting Oni no Nembutsu have an ambiguous nature, for we cannot be sure whether the oni are really religious converts or merely tricksters trying to deceive the faithful as the oni travel the countryside carrying subscription lists. 'Otsu pictures' were scattered throughout Japan by the travellers who eagerly bought them at Otsu. This town was the 53rd, and final, stopping place on the famed Tokaido highway, the road that connect Edo (now Tokyo) to the north with Kyoto, the traditional capital.","physicalDescription":"Woodblock print depicting Oni Nembutsu","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Ichieisai Yoshitsuya","id":"A9296"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper (fiber product)","id":"AAT14109"}],"techniques":[{"text":"block printing","id":"AAT53289"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Woodblock print with colours on paper","categories":[],"styles":[{"text":"Meiji period","id":"x36308"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2006AT8350","2010EK8619"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"010","id":"THES393889"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Woodblock print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Japan","id":"x29399"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1874","earliest":"1874-01-01","latest":"1874-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"34.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"23.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Pap, Japan, prints","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.724-1959"],"accessionNumberNum":"724","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":1959,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-10-27","recordCreationDate":"2003-03-18","availableToBook":true}}
