The poised calm of the Buddhist deity Guanyin (the Chinese goddess of mercy) is contrasted with the liveliness of the little lion leaping up playfully. While it is very difficult to date small carvings of this type in steatite, it closely resembles white ceramic figures of Guanyin from Dehua (in Fujian province), and hence possibly was made between about 1650 and 1750.","physicalDescription":"Soapstone figure of Guanyin with a lion, the Bodhisattva seated with one knee drawn up and the other leg tucked under, and holds a ruyi in her left hand, she gazes down her right at the small lion which places its front paws on her right leg, the flat base incised with numerals 1150, and a three-character Chinese inscription 'Shou (?)
