The performance of these two humorous characters is a comic parody of the Ama dancers in traditional Bugaku theatre. The character depicted in this mask is that of a smiling old man. The mask of Emi-men is sometimes confused with the mask used for the character of Heishitori ('the Wine Bearer'), the drunken attendant in the Bugaku dance Kotokuraku. The facial characteristics are very similar, but the mask of Emi-men is less rounded and fuller. Curiously, the Kyokunsho, the 13th-century treatise on Bugaku theatre, mentions that the mask of Emi-men was actually used for the role of the Wine Bearer to Kotokuraku in a performance that occurred in 1089.","physicalDescription":"Wooden mask of a face, carved, painted and lacquered in red.
