According to Buddhist teachings, a <i>bodhisattva</i> is a deity on the path to reaching Enlightenment. By this period (late Ming) Guanyin took on the aspect of an elegant lady in flowing robes. Here she is pouring from a bottle the sweet waters of salvation. Sea creatures swarm in the waves foaming over her bare feet.","physicalDescription":"Rhinoceros horn figure of Guanyin, standing turned slightly to her right and wearing a long robe among a sea of wave crests, arms draped with a scarf, held in her left hand downwards is an inverted bottle from which liquid pours into the water. Among the waves are carp, crayfish, ray, a crab, and a toad-like animal. The underside is hollow and its edge is carved with wave patterns.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"rhinoceros horn","id":"x38041"}],"techniques":[{"text":"carved","id":"AAT53149"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Rhinoceros horn, carved","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[{"text":"Ming","id":"AAT18438"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2006AH0852"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"015","id":"THES366891"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Figure of Guanyin","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"China","id":"x29398"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1630","earliest":"1625-01-01","latest":"1634-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"The Hon.
