In the 18th century Europeans greatly admired the white and resistant body of Chinese porcelain, available at low cost, but in addition to traditional shapes and designs, they also ordered tableware and household objects made in imitation of western items. The East India trading companies supplied Chinese potters of models and patterns to copy. \r\n\r\nThe design in the centre is a stylised and much adapted version of the traditional Chinese landscape theme, a subject that was re-invented in Europe and integrated into the repertoire of western <i>chinoiserie</i>. The latter was then imitated again on Chinese porcelain made for export. This design was perceived by European clients as purely 'oriental' and 'exotic', although it was very distant from the domestic taste in China. The pattern along the border is in 'rococo' style.","physicalDescription":"Small dessert plate with shallow well and foliated rim, and painted in the centre with a landscape scene with a temple. Round the well is a diamond diaper with four floral insects and on the rim ia an abstract 'rococo' scroll with butterflies.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"porcelain","id":"AAT10662"}],"techniques":[{"text":"glazed","id":"AAT53914"},{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},{"text":"blue and white","id":"x44546"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"porcelain painted in underglaze blue","categories":[{"text":"Porcelain","id":"THES48907"},{"text":"Household objects","id":"THES48939"}],"styles":[{"text":"Qing","id":"AAT18478"},{"text":"Qianlong","id":"AAT18486"},{"text":"Chinese export","id":"AAT120350"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2008BT0481"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"145 (VA)","id":"THES49865"},"free":"","case":"21","shelf":"3","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Dish","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"China","id":"x29398"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1770","earliest":"1765-01-01","latest":"1774-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by Miss Dorothy B.
