The foundation stone was laid by Prince Albert in 1851 and the hospital opened in 1855. It joined with St Bart's to form the Royal Hospitals NHS Trust in 1994, and finally closed in 2015. This is probably a design for the hospital rather than an image taken from life, as a similar image is reproduced in a newspaper dated 1851 (Museum no: E.4902-1923).\r\n\r\nThis object was part of the John Edmund Gardner collection of topographical prints and drawings of London. After Gardner's death the collection passed to his son Edmund Thomas, but was sold to Edward Coates MP in 1910. The collection was sold again in 1923 after Coates' death, and was split between various institutions and private collectors. The portion connected with Hoxton, Homerton, Hackney and Bethnal Green was bought by the Hon. Arthur Villiers and donated to the Bethnal Green Museum.
