Hoole, form parts of \nthe Goulston-street and Flower and Dean street \nscheme of the Metropolitan Board of Works.\nWentworth-street has been widened, and the \ndwellings replace the old common lodging-\nhouses which formerly stood on the site. One \nhundred and thirty rooms are provided in tene-\nments of three, two and one rooms, and are \napproached by stone staircases, which also lead \nto the flat roofs, and communicate on each \nfloor with the offices. Laundries are constructed \non the flat roofs, which serve as drying-grounds.\n\nEach living-room is fitted up with sideboard, \ncoal-locker, and cooking-range, and has at hand \na dust-shoot and pail service. An attempt has \nbeen made to avoid the barrack-like appearance \ntoo often characteristic of this class of dwell-\ning, as it is found that the rooms let more \nreadily when a more cheerful appearance is \ngiven to the exteriors. Red bricks have been \nused for facing, and Lascelles's slabs for the \nbalustrades to balconies; the roofs, where not \nflat, being covered with red tiles. The works \nare being executed by Messrs.
