McKnight Kauffer: The Artist in Advertising', edited by Caitlin Condell and Emily M. Orr, Rizzoli, 2020:\r\n\r\n'Kauffer's museum posters of the 1920s, now in the larger Double Royal size (forty by 25 inches) for display outside Underground stations, garnered special praise. [Frank] Pick himself invited Kauffer to lecture to the Design and Industries Association (DIA) on November 29, 1923, and made extensive and enthusiastic notes that caught the essence of the designer's achievements:\r\n\"Mr McKnight Kauffer for instance brings to the designing of a poster a great deal of thought....The fire of London becomes a surge of leaping flames, and old St. Paul's a tiny silhouette at the flames' heart.  It is the fire of London without any romance or incident or illustration. To achieve this abstract idea of the fire of London is much harder than to draw some incident or illustrate some phase of the fire itself as reported to us. It may seem simple, but there is much labour behind its very simplicity\"'.\r\n\r\nThe poster is plate 029 in this book."}],"production":"The resultant poster was issued by the Underground Electric Railways Co. of London, Ltd. in 1922.","productionType":{"text":"Design","id":"THES48872"},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[{"text":"London","id":"x28980"}],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[{"text":"Great Fire of London","id":"V994"}],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"fires","id":"AAT68986"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.1-1924"],"accessionNumberNum":"1","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":1924,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-11-23","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-30","availableToBook":false}}
