Shiwan was famous for the production of stoneware objects decorated with thick, glossy and colourful glazes; several of them bear the mark of individual artists or companies. Tile making was one of the specialised activities in Shiwan.\r\n\r\nThis figure represents Houyi, the Sun God, holding the disc of the sun and standing on clouds. The body posture and facial expressions, executed in a realistic manner, were taken from actors performing Cantonese opera, while the elaborate jewellery and colourful garments were inspired by stage costumes.\r\n\r\nThree-dimensional figures portraying deities or mythological characters were placed in elaborate architectural friezes that decorated the walls of temples or pagodas. Similar figures can be seen <i>in situ</i> in Daoist and ancestral temples in Guangdong and northern Vietnam.","physicalDescription":"Stoneware figure representing an old man with a long beard standing on stylised clouds and holding a disc, wearing a robe with applied decorations; the surface is decorated with blue alkaline glaze and green and yellow lead glazes; the face and hands are unglazed","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"stoneware","id":"x30197"}],"techniques":[{"text":"glazing","id":"AAT53914"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Stoneware with lead and alkaline glazes","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Stoneware","id":"THES48890"},{"text":"Architectural fittings","id":"THES48994"}],"styles":[{"text":"Qing","id":"AAT18478"},{"text":"Shiwan","id":"x43802"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2009CC4839"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"146","id":"THES49092"},"free":"","case":"CA004","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Figure","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"No","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Shiwan","id":"x32190"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"19th century","earliest":"1800-01-01","latest":"1900-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"HMC.80:2","id":"O167347"},"association":""}],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"75","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"The figure was lent to the Museum by the High Majesty Commissioners in 1871 for the International Exhibition, together with two other ceramics from Foshan.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Figure representing Hou Yi, the sun god, stoneware with alkaline and lead glazes, China, Qing dynasty, 19th century","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Lippincott, Kristen (ed.), </i>The story of time</i> London, National Maritime Museum, 1999","id":"AUTH353427"},"details":"p.33","free":""}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[{"text":"Hou Yi","id":"N7935"}],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["HMC.80:1"],"accessionNumberNum":"80","accessionNumberPrefix":"HMC","accessionYear":null,"otherNumbers":[{"type":{"text":"H.M.C.
