In this carpet, probably made by the Yomud tribal group, they are uncompromisingly bold and apart from quartering them, little has been done to disguise the simple repeating patterns.","physicalDescription":"Carpet, Turkoman; 1860s/early 1870s\r\n\r\nWARP: cream wool; Z2S; 18 threads per inch (75 per dm).\r\n\r\nWEFT: brown and cream wool plied together; Z2S; 2 shoots after each row of knots; 15 knots per inch (58 per dm).\r\n\r\nPILE: wool; 7 colours: dark red, red, yellow, green, dark blue, dark brown, white; asymmetrical knot open to the right and tied around 2 threads; 135 knots per sq. inch (2146 per dm).\r\n\r\nSIDE FINISH: one cord overcast with red wool.\r\n\r\nEND FINISH: Lower: 22\" (6 cms) plain weave; the lower band has red woollen weft with small brocaded motifs in yellow, red and blue. NB: as all brocading is woven from the back, the right side of these motifs appears on the back of the carpet. A band of green follows and then a band of red. Upper: 1\" (1.5 cms) plain weave with red weft with 2 narrow bands of white diagonal blocks joined by a band of black blocks in reverse direction. Immediately above this decoration are 2 pairs of white wefts beyond which the warp threads are knotted in groups of 4 to form a fringe, max. length 7\" (13 cms). In the top corners the outer 22\" (6 cms) of warp does not form the fringe but continues for a max. of 5\" (13 cms); the lower part (12\"/3 cms) is woven in plain weave with narrow bands of dark blue/dark red/dark blue/dark red of the left and on the right in orange/dark blue/orange/red/dark blue. The wefts are returned at both sides to form what may have been a long tab, the upper end of which is missing.\r\n\r\nDESIGN: Field: dark red ground with 12 bands of 4 guls and 11 and two half bands of 3 and two half minor guls. The main gul is a quartered octagon in white and red and each quarter contains a pair of two-headed horned dark red animals. In the centre of each gul is a hooked, dark blue cross on a dark red ground. Secondary guls are alternating white or yellow stars (red in lowest band) within either a blue or green stepped lozenge that extends into a hooked cross. \r\n\r\nMain border: white ground. The sides have a angular dark red meander with red, blue or green curled leaves. The upper and lower border has V-shaped stylized flowers in place of leaves. Inner and Outer borders: reciprocal tulips in red, blue and green along the sides. Upper and lower border have red ground with \r\nalternating green and blue stepped crosses.\r\nOutermost border (on sides only): dark red ground with a zigzag band of diagonal blocks of red and green. \r\n Upper and lower elems: dark red ground each with 3 bands of outward facing stylized floral sprigs.\r\n\r\nDate catalogued: 16.4.96","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"wool","id":"x40131"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Hand knotted woollen pile, on woollen warp and weft; asymmetrical knot, open to the right; 135 knots per sq. in (2,146 per sq. dm)","categories":[{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Floor coverings","id":"THES48953"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2017JW1831","2017JV7580","2017JV7581","2017JV7582","2017JV7583","2017JV7584","2017JV7585","2017JV7586","2017JV7588","2017JV7579","2011EV3391","2006AH0830","2011EU7244","2013GD0252","2017JW0516","2017JW0565","2017JW0578","2017JW0586","2017JW0594","2017JW1832","2017JW1833","2017JW1834","2017JW1841","2017JW1844","2017JW1849","2017JW1850","2017JW1854"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"007","id":"THES325775"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Carpet","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Central Asia","id":"x35011"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1850-1874","earliest":"1850-01-01","latest":"1874-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"323","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"maximum","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"321","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"minimum","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"182","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"maximum","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"173","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"minimum","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"1800s, Turcoman; Saryk or Yomud","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Moya Carey, <i>Persian Art.
