She was a talented embroideress and jeweller in her own right. May began to design jewellery around the turn of the 20th century and typically used colourful stones, often cabochon-cut (dome-shaped). This girdle was shown at the Arts and Crafts Exhibition in London in 1906. An illustration of it appeared in the review of the exhibition in <i>The Studio</i> magazine.","physicalDescription":"Silver girdle set with williamsite, garnets and pearls","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Morris, May","id":"A8674"},"association":{"text":"designer and maker","id":"x34662"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Silver","id":"AAT11029"},{"text":"pearl","id":"AAT11827"},{"text":"Garnet","id":"AAT11097"},{"text":"williamsite","id":"x41472"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silver, set with williamsite, garnets and pearls","categories":[{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"}],"styles":[{"text":"Arts and Crafts movement","id":"AAT21205"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2007BN4359","2007BN4360","2006AN7433","2006AT2179","2018KP2414","2023NN3249"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"91","id":"THES49703"},"free":"","case":"29","shelf":"C","box":"7"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"girdle (belt)","id":"AAT220741"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"about 1906","earliest":"1906-01-01","latest":"1906-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Miss Vivian Lobb","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"28","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"of unclasped fully extended girdle","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"56","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"of circular buckle","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"127","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"as displayed in the Jewellery Gallery"},{"dimension":"Width","value":"321","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"as displayed in the Jewellery Gallery"},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"8","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Silver girdle set with williamsite, garnets and pearls.
