Revellers enjoying the cool of the summer evening throng the span of the Ryogoku Bridge, visible to the south, while roof-boats (<i>yanebune</i>) and other pleasure craft gently ply the waters of the river. The area to the left of the bridge on the Honjo district side of the river was known as the 'Okawabata' or Great River-bank. The tall yellow structure at the foot of the bridge is an enclosure, within which acrobats and other performers entertained the crowds.
