This was situated in the heart of Edo's busy Southern Nihonbashi district in grounds that were much more cramped than is suggested in this idealised evening view. Mount Fuji rises in the south-west above a bank of purple clouds, and to the right we catch a glimpse of crowds crossing the bridge at Nihonbashi. Further beyond, on the horizon, the roofs of the outbuildings of Edo Castle are just visible. The woman on the right is carrying an <i>ema</i> or votive picture to give as an offering to the shrine. The bundle of sticks that the courtesan on the left is holding are counters by which she can remember how many out of a pledged number of visits to the shrine she has made.","physicalDescription":"Fan print, aiban size.
