The decorative techniques and motifs were influenced by the objects Venetian merchants brought back to the city when trading with the Arab and Turkish empires that bordered the Mediterranean.\r\n \r\nVenetian brass work was almost always engraved and often inlaid with silver wire (now missing on this example). The decoration was extensive, often covering the whole surface of the object. It featured the arabesque pattern that was based on a stylised plant with a winding stem. Here the maker has combined the Islamic arabesque with coats of arms, which suggests that the patron might have been a wealthy aristocrat.","physicalDescription":"Ewer with splayed foot, rounded body, straight spout, curved handle and a lid surmounted by a bird, brass with engraved decoration in horizontal registers of foliate scrollwork, roundels, cruciforms and reciprocal trefoil arcading","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"brass","id":"AAT10946"}],"techniques":[{"text":"engraved","id":"AAT53829"},{"text":"inlaid","id":"AAT53850"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Brass, engraved and formerly inlaid with silver","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Africa","id":"THES49019"}],"styles":[{"text":"Veneto-saracenic","id":"x35138"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"MES","id":"THES48607"},"images":["2006AK4460","2018KU9517"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"007","id":"THES367454"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Ewer","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Egypt","id":"x29512"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Syria","id":"x29200"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1350-1450","earliest":"1350-01-01","latest":"1450-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"possibly"}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Dr W L Hildburgh, FSA","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"24","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"17","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Middle East, Metalwork.
