Held in 1989, the competition was dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the VKLSM (All-Union Leninist Communist Youth League). Although it lacks eyes and mouth, the image is recognisably that of Joseph Stalin (1879-1953). At the same time it symbolises the 'facelessness' of a totalitarian system. During the <i>perestroika</i> ('reconstruction') of the late 1980s, the new Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev brought <i>glasnost</i> ('openness') to Soviet political life.
