The institution of the Panchen Lama was created by the Fifth Dalai Lama (1617-1682), who declared his teacher Choki Gyaltsen (1570-1662) to be an incarnation of the Buddha Amitabha. Sucessive re-incarnations of Choki Gyaltsen have been recognised as Panchen Lamas.
